Dezideriy Tovt

Dezideriy Tovt

Dezideriy Tovt was one of the most exciting attacking players of Dynamo Kyiv in the late 1940s, admired by both fans and experts for his skill and flair. Born on September 4, 1920, in Uzhhorod (then part of Czechoslovakia), he developed at the local club “Rus,” where he quickly emerged as a talented forward. Representing Zakarpattia teams during and after World War II, he gained recognition for his technical ability and goal-scoring, becoming one of the standout players of the region. His performances, including a memorable hat-trick against Dynamo Kyiv, earned him a move to the Ukrainian capital in 1949.

At Dynamo Kyiv, Tovt made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut and finishing his first season with nine goals. Known for his powerful long-range shots, versatility, and composure, he became one of the team’s key attacking players. In 1950, he was Dynamo’s top scorer with 11 goals in 32 matches. Over three seasons, he played 85 league games (scoring 24 goals) and 6 Soviet Cup matches, occasionally serving as team captain. Despite his success, injuries and age gradually limited his role, as he had joined the club relatively late in his career.

After leaving Dynamo, Tovt returned to Uzhhorod, where he helped Spartak Uzhhorod win the Ukrainian SSR championship again in 1953 and scored many goals over several seasons. He retired in 1956 and later worked as a coach and football official, including serving as head coach of Hoverla in the early 1970s and leading the regional football federation. Tovt spent his final years in Hungary and passed away on July 10, 2002, at the age of 81. His legacy remains strong in Zakarpattia, where a memorial tournament is held in his honor.
