Leonid Buryak, one of the greatest midfielders in Soviet and Ukrainian football history, was born on July 10, 1953, in Odesa. His career spanned decades as both a player and coach, leaving a lasting mark on Ukrainian football.
Buryak began his career in Odesa, rising through youth teams despite early setbacks and later became a key player for Dynamo Kyiv, winning multiple USSR championships, cups and European trophies. He earned 49 caps for the USSR national team, winning Olympic bronze in 1976, and was widely recognized for his vision, technical skill and leadership on the field.
After his playing career Buryak transitioned to coaching, managing clubs including Chornomorets Odesa, Dynamo Kyiv and the Ukrainian national team. He helped develop the next generation of Ukrainian talent, giving debuts to future stars such as Andriy Voronin, Ruslan Rotan and Oleg Husiev.
Buryak is also an author and football intellectual, sharing his insights in books such as “Hot Spots of the Field” and “I Lived in a Happy Football Era”, emphasizing respect for the team and dedication to the sport.
