Andriy Shevchenko

Andriy Shevchenko is one of the greatest footballers in the history of Ukraine and one of the most famous players of his generation in Europe. He was born on September 29, 1976, in the village of Dvirkivshchyna in the Kyiv region and grew up in Kyiv. From a young age he showed great talent and was noticed by coach Oleksandr Shpakov who invited him to join the Dynamo Kyiv academy. At one point, after the Chernobyl disaster, Shevchenko almost stopped playing football but his coach convinced him to return which became a turning point in his life.

He made his debut for Dynamo Kyiv’s first team in 1994 at the age of 18 and quickly proved himself as a top talent. Under the guidance of the legendary coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi Shevchenko became a key player in one of the strongest Dynamo teams in history. He gained international recognition during the late 1990s, especially in the UEFA Champions League, where he scored important goals against top clubs such as Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid. One of his most memorable achievements was a hat-trick against Barcelona at Camp Nou. In 1999 he helped Dynamo reach the semi-finals of the Champions League which significantly raised his profile in European football.

Later that year Shevchenko transferred to AC Milan in what was then a record deal for a Ukrainian player. In Italy he reached the peak of his career and became one of the best strikers in the world. With Milan he won the UEFA Champions League in 2003, scoring the decisive penalty in the final, as well as the Serie A title in 2004, the Italian Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. Individually he won the Ballon d’Or in 2004, recognizing him as the best player in Europe. He also became one of Milan’s all-time top scorers and the leading scorer in Milan derbies.

In 2006 Shevchenko moved to Chelsea but his time in England was less successful due to injuries and strong competition within the team. Although he won domestic trophies and scored over 20 goals he was unable to replicate his Milan form. Later he returned to Milan on loan and then went back to Dynamo Kyiv where he continued to contribute with important goals and leadership.

On the international stage Shevchenko is the all-time top scorer for the Ukraine national team with 48 goals in 111 matches. He played a crucial role in leading Ukraine to the quarter-finals of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. One of his most iconic moments came at Euro 2012 when he scored two goals against Sweden to secure Ukraine’s first-ever win at a European Championship finals tournament.

After retiring as a player Shevchenko moved into coaching. He first worked as an assistant for the Ukraine national team and later became the head coach in 2016. Under his leadership Ukraine reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020. After leaving the national team he had a short spell as head coach of Italian club Genoa.

In January 2024 Shevchenko became the president of the Ukrainian Association of Football. Today he remains an important figure in Ukrainian football not only as a legendary player but also as a leader contributing to the development of the game in his country.
