Serhiy Rebrov, one of the most iconic figures in Ukrainian football, has built an outstanding career both as a player and as a coach. Born on June 3, 1974, in Horlivka, Rebrov showed early promise in sports before committing fully to football.
He began his professional career at Shakhtar Donetsk, making his debut at just 17 and quickly establishing himself as a talented forward. In 1992 he transferred to Dynamo Kyiv where he faced strong competition but gradually emerged as a key player.
Rebrov’s breakthrough came under legendary coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi. During the late 1990s he became one of Europe’s top forwards, forming a highly effective partnership with Andriy Shevchenko. Together they led Dynamo Kyiv to remarkable success in the UEFA Champions League. Rebrov was named Ukraine’s best footballer in 1996 and 1998.
In 2000 he moved to Tottenham Hotspur, later playing for Fenerbahçe and West Ham United. Although his impact abroad was more modest, he gained valuable international experience that would later influence his coaching career.
Rebrov returned to Dynamo Kyiv in 2005, taking on a leadership role before finishing his playing career at Rubin Kazan. He also made a significant contribution to the Ukraine national team, earning 75 caps and scoring 15 goals, including participation in the 2006 FIFA World Cup where Ukraine reached the quarterfinals.
After retiring Rebrov transitioned into coaching. He took charge of Dynamo Kyiv in 2014 and quickly achieved success, winning two Ukrainian Premier League titles and domestic cups. He later continued his career abroad, working with clubs such as Al-Ahli, Ferencváros and Al-Ain.
His most notable coaching success came in Hungary where he led Ferencváros to three consecutive league titles and a return to the UEFA Champions League group stage after a long absence.
In 2023 Rebrov was appointed head coach of the Ukraine national team. With his international experience and strong leadership he is widely expected to play a key role in the future development of Ukrainian football.
Rebrov’s journey from a young talent in Donetsk region to a respected figure in European football highlights his dedication, adaptability and long-lasting impact on the game.
