During the night of September 26 CONCACAF Nations League matches took place. Suriname, represented by Dynamo player Justin Lonwijk, played the first of the four matches scheduled for the team during this international break – against Honduras.
Suriname secured a 3:2 away victory. The Dynamo player started the match and played 70 minutes before being substituted. The match was an entertaining and high-scoring one.
In the 18th minute, the Dynamo player scored a goal after combining with Kerk and firing a shot from approximately the center of the penalty area – 0:1. However, just two minutes later, the hosts equalized through Moncada, who finished Palma’s cross from the left into the penalty area with a first-time left-footed shot – 1:1.
Three minutes later, they managed to take the lead, with Moncada now providing the assist, while Roches scored, winning the ball in a battle with two defenders and lifting it over the goalkeeper with a shot from outside the penalty area, taking advantage of the fact that he had come too far out of his goal – 2:1. However, before the break, Djoubitana, who was left unmarked in the center of the penalty area, equalized with a shot past the goalkeeper – 2:2.
In the second half, the decisive moment was an own goal by the Hondurans, scored by Palma in the 66th minute. It should also be noted that Lonwijk received a yellow card, shortly after which he was substituted.
Thus, Genk Fraser’s side earned their first three points in the standings.
It should be noted that Suriname are in Group B of League A of the CONCACAF Nations League alongside Honduras, Jamaica, Guatemala, Martinique and El Salvador. El Salvador, who defeated Martinique (3:1), and Jamaica, who beat Guatemala (3:2), also earned three points after the first round.
Justin Lonwijk’s national team will play their next matches against Martinique (September 29 at 1:00 Kyiv time) and twice against Guatemala (October 3 at 1:00 and October 6 at 3:00).
In total, Lonwijk has made 14 appearances for the Suriname national team, scoring 4 goals.
