Ukraine’s U20 national team started their World Cup campaign in Chile with a win over South Korea on Saturday, September 27. The Ukrainians made a strong start, scoring twice within the first 16 minutes - first through Hennadiy Synchuk’s powerful shot from the edge of the box and then via Oleksandr Pyshchur’s header after a perfect cross.
Near the end of the first half defender Oleksii Husiev cleared the ball off the line to deny South Korea a goal. In the second half the match was more balanced and the Koreans pulled one back in the 80th minute from a corner. Despite late pressure Ukraine held on for a 2:1 victory.
Two Dynamo Kyiv players featured: Oleksii Husiev started and played the full match while striker Matvii Ponomarenko came on in stoppage time.
Ukraine will face Panama next on Tuesday, September 30, and finish the group stage against Paraguay on October 3.
