It was named NK Rijeka in 1954.
In 1978 and 1979 the team won Yugoslav Cup.
After the dissolution of Yugoslavia Rijeka won the Croatian Cup (2005, 2006), became Prva HNL bronze medalists (2004, 2009) and runners-up (1999, 2006).
The majority of Rijeka performers are young Croatian players. Team captain is 31-year-old defender Dario Knežević who used to feature for Juventus in 2008/09 season. He also won 13 caps (1 goal) for Croatia national team. The Whites head coach is Matjaž Kek.
