Tribute to Dynamo players – 1986 Cup Winners’ Cup champions

Before the match against Shakhtar, played as part of the 26th round of the Ukrainian Premier League, a ceremonial tribute took place at the Valeriy Lobanovskyi Stadium to honor the Dynamo team that 40 years ago on May 2, 1986, won the third European trophy in the club’s history – the Cup Winners’ Cup.

Legendary Dynamo players, whose names are written by golden letters in the history of the famous Kyiv club, came out onto a specially prepared stage. Anatolii Demianenko, Volodymyr Bezsonov, Vasyl Rats, Oleh Kuznetsov, Oleksii Mykhailychenko, Mykhailo Mykhailov, Ivan Yaremchuk, Pavlo Yakovenko and Oleksandr Zavarov, dressed in elegant suits by Arber, enjoyed the attention of the fans under the warm rays of the spring sun, reminiscing among themselves about the events of 40 years ago.

Relatives of Dynamo players who are sadly no longer with us were also present: Svitlana Lobanovska, daughter of Valeriy Lobanovskyi; Iryna Yevsieieva, wife of Vasyl Yevsieiev; Halyna Chanova, wife of Viktor Chanov; and Danylo Bal, son of Andriy Bal.

Journalists from Dynamo TV had prepared in advance a video dedicated to the triumph of Valeriy Lobanovskyi’s team, which was shown on the big screen. After the video ended, the captain of that legendary team, Anatolii Demianenko, once again — just like in May 1986 in Lyon — raised the prestigious European trophy above his head.
