Anatoliy Konkov

Anatoliy Konkov, born September 19, 1949, in Krasnyi Luch, Luhansk region, began his football journey in Kramatorsk, where he trained in youth teams before joining Shakhtar Donetsk at age 19. Despite interest from Dynamo Kyiv, he initially stayed in Donetsk under coach Oleg Oshenkov and quickly established himself as a key defensive midfielder. Konkov’s early career included challenges such as team crises, internal conflicts, and national team duties, including scoring the decisive goal that sent the USSR to the Euro 1972 final, where they ultimately lost to West Germany.

In 1973, when Valeriy Lobanovskyi and Oleg Bazylevych took charge of Dynamo Kyiv, Konkov joined the team and immediately became a starter. Renowned for his ball-winning skills, precise first passes, and tactical intelligence, he adapted quickly to Lobanovskyi’s demanding training methods. In 1975, he successfully transitioned to a libero role after an injury to Dynamo’s defender Mykhailo Fomenko, combining defense with initiating attacks. Konkov played key roles in both Dynamo and the USSR national team, earning multiple USSR championships, the Soviet Cup, and European titles like the Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

After retiring in 1981, Konkov spent nearly 30 years as a coach and sporting director with clubs including Shakhtar Donetsk, Tavriya, Zenit, and Ukraine’s national teams. Later, he served as president of the Football Federation of Ukraine from 2012 to 2015, a tenure marked by both administrative successes and controversial decisions. Despite political and managerial challenges, Konkov’s legacy is defined by his achievements on the field: a technically gifted midfielder whose intelligence, vision, and leadership made him one of the finest defensive midfielders of Soviet football.
