Maksim Shatskikh, born on August 30, 1978, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, became one of the most prolific scorers in Ukrainian football history and a beloved figure at Dynamo Kyiv. He began playing football in the youth academy of Pakhtakor under coach Sergey Kovalyov, initially trying out as a goalkeeper and defender before moving into attack due to his speed and instinctive understanding of the game. Early in his career, he played for various Uzbek and Russian clubs, gradually establishing himself as a reliable striker and attracting interest from top clubs across Europe.
In 1999 Shatskikh joined Dynamo Kyiv, quickly becoming a key player under coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi. He made an unforgettable debut by scoring twice in a UEFA Champions League qualifier against Žalgiris and continued to score consistently in domestic and European competitions. Over ten seasons with Dynamo, he scored 142 goals in 328 games, won six Ukrainian championships, five Ukrainian Cups, and two Ukrainian Super Cups. Shatskikh was known for his physical strength, intelligent positioning, and ability to adapt to Lobanovskyi’s tactical system, becoming the first foreign player in Ukraine to surpass 100 league goals.
Shatskikh also excelled internationally, scoring 34 goals in 61 appearances for the Uzbekistan national team, becoming the country’s all-time top scorer, and reaching the 2011 AFC Asian Cup semifinals. After leaving Dynamo, he had brief stints abroad and returned to Ukrainian clubs such as Arsenal Kyiv, Chornomorets, and Hoverla, finishing his career at Rukh Vynnyky. Since 2016 he has been working as a coach in Dynamo’s academy and as an assistant coach, bringing his wealth of experience and professional dedication to developing the next generation of footballers.
