Mykhailo Mykhailov, born on July 6, 1959, in Kirovohrad, was a highly respected goalkeeper and Honored Master of Sports. He started his football journey as a field player but switched to goalkeeper after filling in for a sick teammate in his youth team. With his background in gymnastics, he had excellent flexibility and coordination. Mykhailov played for clubs including Zirka Kirovohrad, Dnipro, Dynamo Kyiv, Neftçi Baku, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Apollon Athens, winning multiple Soviet championships and cups, as well as the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1986. He also appeared in 13 European matches and was repeatedly named among the 33 best players in the USSR.
At Dynamo Kyiv, Mykhailov initially served as a backup to Yuri Romensky and later shared duties with Viktor Chanov. His breakthrough came in 1985 when Chanov suffered a broken hand, allowing Mykhailov to demonstrate his reliability, confidence, and leadership in goal, leading to national team call-ups. Despite the challenge of competing for the starting position, he maintained professionalism and eventually became one of Dynamo’s key players during the mid-1980s, contributing to the legendary “golden team” alongside players like Oleg Blokhin, Igor Belanov, and Aleksandr Zavarov.
After retiring, Mykhailov became a pioneering goalkeeping coach at Dynamo, introducing specialized training for goalkeepers at both youth and senior levels from 1993 onward. He also worked with the Ukrainian national team from 2007 to 2009. Beyond football, he explored music, recording and performing his own songs, and his legacy continues through his son Andriy, who followed in his footsteps as a goalkeeper before becoming a football agent.
