Vasyl Turyanchyk

Vasyl Turyanchyk was a key figure in Dynamo Kyiv’s early successes, known as a captain, a versatile player, and a scorer of important and spectacular goals. He joined the club shortly before its first championship triumph and spent 11 seasons there, winning four Soviet league titles and two Soviet Cups. Despite not always playing in a fixed position, his adaptability allowed him to contribute both in defense and attack. One of his most memorable moments came in 1961, when he scored a stunning overhead kick in a decisive match against Torpedo Moscow, helping Dynamo secure the championship.

Turyanchyk’s football intelligence and versatility made him an essential part of coach Viktor Maslov’s tactical innovations. Originally a defender, he was later moved into a deeper midfield role, effectively becoming one of the first defensive midfielders in Soviet football — a position Maslov famously described as a “wave-breaker.” His ability to read the game, win duels, start attacks, and even finish them with goals made him a unique and valuable player. He also played in notable international matches, including a high-profile friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in 1959, which highlighted Dynamo’s growing reputation.

After retiring from professional football, Turyanchyk returned to his native Transcarpathia, where he worked as a coach with both youth and senior teams in cities such as Uzhhorod, Irshava, and Mukachevo. Preferring a quieter life away from big cities, he remained connected to football and Dynamo Kyiv, occasionally taking part in veteran matches and events. Even in his later years, he stayed active and passionate about the game, continuing to share his experience and knowledge with younger generations.
