Volodymyr Levchenko was born on February 18, 1944, in Kyiv and began playing football in local school teams, following in the footsteps of other Kyiv legends like Valeriy Lobanovskyi. As a teenager, he trained at the city’s top youth schools, including Dynamo’s academy, and quickly achieved success, winning the USSR youth championship in 1961. He then progressed to Dynamo Kyiv’s reserve team, claiming three junior USSR titles in 1963, 1965, and 1966, and gradually earned his place in the first team.
Levchenko became a key player for Dynamo Kyiv in 1965, competing for the left-back position with more experienced teammates. His main strengths were ball-winning skills, defensive reliability, and the ability to support counterattacks, making him a highly valued team player. During his career at Dynamo, he won three USSR championships (1966–1968) and two USSR Cups (1964, 1966), and was included twice in the “33 Best Players of the USSR” list. He also earned recognition at the national level, playing three matches for the USSR and being included in the squad for the 1968 European Championship.
Levchenko’s career was tragically cut short at the age of 27 due to a severe car accident on May 13, 1971, which left him unable to continue professional football. He later played in veteran matches and worked in the construction sector. Sadly, in April 2006, he died in another car accident. Despite his early exit from professional football, Levchenko is remembered as a dedicated, disciplined, and talented player who contributed significantly to Dynamo Kyiv’s golden era.
