Volodymyr Muntyan was born on September 14, 1946, in Kotovsk, Odesa region but moved to Kyiv with his parents before school, becoming a product of the capital’s football system. From a young age he spent all his free time practicing with the ball and observing older players at the SKA stadium. His skill and flair were quickly noticed by Mikhail Korsunsky, a legendary Kyiv youth coach, who encouraged him to join Dynamo Kyiv’s youth teams in 1963. Muntyan was an exceptionally versatile athlete, excelling in acrobatics, volleyball, basketball, skating and skiing, and he displayed remarkable technical skill and creativity on the football field from early on.
Muntyan made his debut for Dynamo Kyiv’s first team on October 15, 1965, and became a core player by 1967. Under coaches like Viktor Maslov and Valeriy Lobanovskyi, he helped the club dominate Soviet football, winning seven league titles, four silver medals, two USSR Cups, the Cup Winners’ Cup, and the European Super Cup. Known for his teamwork, vision, and precise passing, Muntyan played 420 matches for Dynamo in all competitions, scoring 77 goals, including 70 in the league and six in European tournaments. He also earned 49 caps and seven goals for the USSR national team, participating in the 1970 World Cup and winning bronze at the 1976 Olympics.
After retiring in 1977 Muntyan remained dedicated to football, coaching youth teams and later senior squads, including Dynamo’s Olympic team, SC Tavriya, Obolon, Alania, Kryvbas, Vorskla, and even national team in Guinea. He played a key role in developing young talent, including giving Serhiy Rebrov his first coaching experience. Muntyan also contributed to veteran football initiatives, heading the “Dynamo Kyiv Veterans” organization and helping former players in need, earning widespread respect for his lifelong dedication to the sport and the football community.
