IDEAL SEASON START
The tradition of national super cups comes from England just like the majority of football traditions: the first time they played for the trophy called FA Community Shield was in 1908. Domestic league and national cup winner perform in this game. After the Second World War the habit of starting new season with Super Cup migrated to other countries of the continent.
In summer of 2004 this great European tradition came to Ukraine. Back then 2003/04 Ukrainian league winners – FC Dynamo Kyiv – faced the Ukrainian Cup holders – FC Shakhtar Donetsk – in Odesa. In a month the 14th Ukrainian Super Cup will take place.
The Ukrainian Super Cup is ideal start of new football year. First, usually (9 times out of 13) our top teams – Dynamo and Shakhtar – struggle for the trophy. Second, this is the battle of the best teams of our state. Third, it’s a way to summarize the previous season and to start the new one.
