Bordeaux - Dynamo - 1:0. Match report

FC Girondins de Bordeaux produced an excellent rearguard performance to repel FC Dynamo Kyiv, and reach the last 16 courtesy of Cheick Diabaté's strike.

On a nine-game European winning streak at the Stade Chaban-Delmas, the hosts came into it with an away-goal to their name, and went ahead on aggregate courtesy of Diabaté. Francis Gillot's men soaked up the Dynamo pressure after the interval, failing to buckle to secure a tie with SL Benfica.

After a 1-1 draw in Ukraine last week the visitors knew they had to get on the scoresheet to be in with a chance of progressing and came out of the blocks with intent. Niko Kranjčar was the first to test Cédric Carrasso, before Andriy Yarmolenko's flick sent the keeper sprawling to his left from a corner. It was one-way traffic but Admir Mehmedi was unable to reach a Lukman Haruna cross, and Carrasso again was forced into action from Miguel Veloso's free-kick.

Bordeaux had been on the back foot throughout the first half, but they hit with a sucker punch before the break. Benoît Trémoulinas' corner flicked off Grégory Sertic, allowing Diabaté to pounce and drive in at the back post on 41 minutes.

Yarmolenko volleyed wide after the interval as Dynamo flew forward, and Haruna somehow missed a header with the goal at his mercy. Oleh Blokhin's side got more and more desperate as the clock ticked by, but André Poko, Florian Marange and Marc Planus were excellent in a resolute Bordeaux rearguard action, holding firm to secure passage to the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League round of 16 for the first time since 2004.
