Ukraine’s run at the Youth World Cup in Chile has come to an end. The team, led by Dmytro Mykhaylenko, lost a hard-fought Round of 16 match to Spain by a score of 0:1.
Both Dynamo Kyiv players called up to the squad – defender Oleksii Husiev, currently on loan at Kudrivka, and forward Matvii Ponomarenko – took part in the game.
Both were active against the Spaniards with Ponomarenko standing out in particular. He was substituted at halftime but was Ukraine’s most noticeable player in the first half. After he was fouled Spain received their only yellow card of the period. Ponomarenko also created several scoring chances but was unable to find the net as were his teammates. Husiev played the full match.
The outcome was decided by a single goal scored in the 24th minute by Pablo García.
