FC Dynamo Kyiv faced FC Mariupol away in the Ukrainian Cup round of 16.
Mircea Lucescu decided to apply lineup rotation in this game. Boiko was the goalkeeper, Tymchyk and Karavayev – laterals, Zabarnyi and Shabanov – centre backs, Sydorchuk, Shaparenko and Liedniev – midfielders, Antiukh and Verbic – wingers and Shkurin – forward.
Dynamo started the game carefully, getting accustomed to the tempo. They worked on build-up using wings.
Visitors created the first chance in the 14th minute. Shkurin attempted with a header, but the ball went wide. In the following attack he found Liedniev with accurate pass, but Turbayevskyi coped with Bohdan’s shot.
Still in a minute goalkeeper couldn’t deal with the header by Benjamin Verbic, who scored after cross from the corner flag. This was his first goal in 11 months.
In the 33rd minute Dynamo doubled the score similarly. Shaparenko took a corner, the ball reached the far post and Shabanov sent it into the net.
The score could get bigger in the first half, but Turbayevskyi did a great job. He parried two powerful strikes by Shaparenko and follow-up by Antiukh, who was offside anyway.
Mariupol got active only late in the first half. They had a counterattack which finished with a low cross into the penalty area, but Boiko reached the ball.
After the break home side acted much more aggressively. Peterman had a chance to score with a header after cross by Kashchuk and missed just a bit.
The second half was even. Teams didn’t create a lot of opportunities. One can mention the shot by Verbic from outside the penalty area that went wide.
Still, five minutes before the time, Ocheretko reanimated intrigue. After pass from Mykytyshyn, he rushed into Dynamo box and hit the corner – 1:2.
Still Mariupol didn’t manage to achieve more, so Dynamo reach the quarterfinal. The match is expected to take place on March 2.
