FC Dynamo Kyiv faced the Austrian side SK Sturm Graz in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. The first leg that took place in Lodz, Poland, was won by the White-Blues – 1:0.
Comparing with the previous match, there were two substitutions in Dynamo starting lineup: Syrota and Tsyhankov replaced Popov and Karavayev.
Kyivans created the first chance of the game. Shaparenko obtained the ball from Tsyhankov in a promising position, but sent it a bit over the bar. Sturm responded with a dangerous cross from the left side, but Bushchan cleared the ball. Later Heorhiy parried the strike by Hojlund.
Anyway, eventually the home side persistence resulted in goal. Hojlund got the ball inside the penalty area and sent it into the net.
Buialskyi could equalize right away, but didn’t manage to perform a header properly. In the following episode Vitaliy missed from inside the box again. Meanwhile Bushchan coped with the shot by Prass.
In the second half the speed decreased a bit. Danger mostly resulted from set pieces. Bushchan reacted to shots by Sarkaria and Horvat from close range.
It seemed the situation was satisfactory for Sturm. Dynamo were mostly in possession, but didn’t really move forward. The closest one to success was Harmash in a stoppage time as he hit the bar with a header! As far as the score was 1:1 on aggregate, the teams proceeded to extra time.
The start of the first half was quite rough which resulted in yellow cards. Dynamo responded to such actions with scored goal. After incredible cross by Tsyhankov, Vivcharenko joined the attack and hit the target. Later Sarkaria got the second booking and was sent off.
Sturm maintained possession in the second half of extra time while Dynamo used counterattacks. Eventually Buialskyi obtained the ball, passed to the left side of the penalty area and Tsyhankov made it 2:1 with one-touch strike.
Thus Dynamo win 3:1 on aggregate and go through to the play-off round to face SL Benfica.
