On Thursday, August 17, FC Dynamo Kyiv played the UEFA Europa League 3rd qualifying round second leg against Aris Thessaloniki FC in Bucharest.
Dynamo maintained possession early in the game, but didn’t really create scoring chances. Aris didn’t intend to risk, so Bushchan didn’t have much work. Meanwhile Kyivans had difficulties coping with visitors’ defense.
Greek side attempts weren’t dangerous either. Halfway through first half the White-Blues won another corner, but that didn’t result in anything. Dynamo were having their combinations mostly in their own half while Aris used probably their only opportunity. Palma crossed into the penalty area from the left side and Durasek netted the ball from close range – 0:1.
Shortly before the break Dynamo equalized. Sydorchuk put a fabulous chip into the box and Voloshyn headed the ball in spectacularly – 1:1.
Kyivans started the second half aggressively, but Aris coped with the pressure and had a promising attack as Moberg Karlsson appeared in the far post and failed to score from a perfect position. Sydorchuk responded with a decent shot, but a bit wide.
Yarmolenko attempted on target, but goalkeeper coped with the strike. Then Voloshyn didn’t manage to hit the ball properly being inside the box. But the following attack was a success. Andriyevskyi put an accurate long ball to Karavayev, who rushed into the penalty area and hit the target one-touch.
Shortly before the time Aris took a corner and Dynamo were really lucky that the ball went over the bar.
So, it all went to extra time. The first half started with a dangerous cross by Diallo, but Yarmolenko didn’t reach the ball. Later Bushchan parried the shot by Pavicic from close range while Christodoulopoulos missed with a free kick.
Early in the second extra time half visitors got outnumbered as Pavicic got his second booking of the game for the foul against Dubinchak. Despite that Dynamo didn’t manage to grab the winner while Aris had a chance after free kick as Bushchan saved the header from Fabiano.
Thus it was all settled in the penalty shootout that was really dramatic. Goalkeepers parried a shot each while Odubajo sent the ball over the bar! It’s 6:5 and Dynamo go through to the next stage!
