The club was founded in 1908, but they reached the top league of the country only in 1922.
Lugano won their first trophy in 1930/31 season. It was the national cup. In 1937/38 they won the domestic league for the first time.
1930s, 1940s and mid-1960s were the most successful periods for Lugano. In 1967 they even won the Intertoto Cup.
Swiss side made the debut on European arena in 1968/69 season.
In 2003 the club declared bankruptcy, but in 2004 they got united with FC Malcantone Agno and continued their league performances.
