Matvii Ponomarenko: «The ball fell kindly to my foot and I scored»

Dynamo forward Matvii Ponomarenko, who scored the only goal in the 1:0 win over FC Rukh Lviv, commented on Dynamo’s first match after the winter break and explained how he managed to score:

– My impressions are very positive. The game wasn’t easy because of the heavy pitch but the most important thing is that we won. Now we’ll prepare for the next matches with good emotions. I’ll repeat – the field wasn’t in the best condition but it didn’t prevent us from getting a positive result today.

– Did you manage to carry out everything the coach asked for? Were there any adjustments at halftime?

– Yes, there were certain adjustments but what we discussed in the dressing room will stay there. Of course on a pitch like this it wasn’t easy to control the ball but as I said it didn’t stop us from winning.

– Your goal turned out to be decisive and brought the team victory. Tell us about that moment.

– Coach Maciej Kędziorek asked me to say in the interview that we had practiced this set piece (smiles). But seriously it was just a regular game situation. The ball happened to bounce kindly onto my foot and fortunately I was able to score.

– Maksym Korobov made his debut today. Did you congratulate him?

– Of course. The whole team congratulated him, supported him and praised him. I think it was a successful debut – if the team wins and keeps a clean sheet that’s great for a defender. Maksym could have scored himself but even so it’s an excellent result. Well done to him.

– You’ve spent a few days back in Kyiv. Have you adapted to the freezing weather?

– Yes, we’ve already gotten used to it. It’s not the first time we’ve returned from warm training camps to cold weather so it wasn’t a problem. We had several full training sessions, got back into our rhythm, adapted – everything is fine.

– What do you expect from the next home match against Epitsentr?

– We expect a win and a good-quality performance. We’ll work hard to achieve that.
