Astana are quite a young club. It was founded in 2009 when two teams, FC Megasport and FC Alma-Ata, were united. The new team was named FC Lokomotiv. Their first coach was Sergei Yuran. FC Dynamo Kyiv current assistant coach Maksim Shatskikh spent one season in Astana. He made 15 appearances and scored 8 goals.
Lokomotiv started their performances in the top league of the country at once. The first season they finished second. In three years they did it again. Starting with 2014 Astana are permanent champions. At the moment they are also league leaders with 58 points after 24 matchdays.
The team performs at the biggest stadium in Kazakhstan – Astana arena. It has the capacity of 30 200 seats. The stadium has artificial turf.
Starting with 2013/2014 season FC Astana take part in euro cups regularly. In 2015/2016 season they featured in the Champions League group stage. Last season they reached the Europa League round of 32.
