Dynamo Kyiv still believe they can progress to the UEFA Champions League knock-out stage despite the goalless draw against the newly crowned Russian champions FC Rubin in Kazan on Tuesday night.
Valeriy Gazzaev's men looked dangerous from the very beginning of the match and could have taken the lead as early as the fourth minute, but Andriy Yarmolenko’s shot flew high over Sergei Ryzhikov’s crossbar. The young forward then had another chance to score the opener, but again fired wide. At the other end, the hosts responded with Gökdeniz Karadeniz crossing for Aleksandr Bukharov but the forward's headed effort was easily gathered by Oleskandr Shovkovskyy. Argentinean striker Alejandro Domínguez came closest for the home side, but his scissor-kick on 45 minutes was brilliantly parried by Dynamo custodian.
In the second period, both teams defended resolutely with timely interventions from goalkeepers. And, even though there were perfect opportunities, neither team was able to find a breakthrough.
The race to reach the play-off round remains tight in Group F as reigning European champions FC Barcelona defeated group leaders FC Internazionale Milano on the same night. With five points from five matches, the White-Blues now must win in their remaining game in Kyiv on 9 December to have any chance of a play-off place.
