Stade de Suisse: hockey record, solar-cell arrays and red chair

The game will take place in the capital of Switzerland, Bern, at Stade de Suisse – home side ground. We’ve decided to tell about this stadium in more detail.

It was built in 1925 and was called Wankdorf at first. Its capacity was 22 thousand seats, but later it was increased to 42 thousand. In 1954 the World Cup final took place at Wankdorf and the capacity of the arena reached 64 thousand seats.

In 2001 Wankdorf was demolished and Stade de Suisse construction started. It lasted till 2005. New stadium was build for 350 million Swiss francs. It was officially opened on July 30. Since then it has the capacity of 31 783 seats. Euro-2008 final stage games were played here.

The turf is artificial. Young Boys don’t have their own training facility, so they have training sessions at the stadium.

Stade de Suisse interesting peculiarity is the only red seat called Hot Seat (other seats are black and yellow). It was the first seat installed at the stadium after reconstruction in honor of Young Boys former goalkeeper and coach Walter Eich.

The roof of the arena is also special. It has solar-cell arrays in it that produce 1 200 000 kWh per year.

Record attendance at this stadium was set during… hockey match! On January 14 2007 hockey teams Bern and Langnau faced each other here. All 30 076 tickets were sold.

The arena often hosts concerts of famous musicians, such as Bon Jovi, Bruce Spingsteen, AC/DC, Pink, Muse, Depeche Mode, One Direction and Celine Dion.

In 2005 FC Dynamo Kyiv lost against FC Thun – 0:1 – at Stade de Suisse and thus didn’t reach the Champions League group stage.

Now the White-Blues have a chance to add a positive event to the history of their performances in Switzerland.
