The following is a transcript of the letter sent from Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system in Ukraine Mr. Olivier Adam to FC Dynamo Kyiv President Mr. Ihor Surkis this week:
Dear Mr. Surkis,
I would like to thank the FC Dynamo (Kyiv) and you personally for the support of Stand Up and Take Action against Poverty Campaign. The Stand Up even was held on 17 October 2009 during the Dynamo (Kyiv) – Obolon (Kyiv) football match and was initiated by the United Nations Office within the framework of the United Nations worldwide campaign for achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
I would like to express special appreciation to the fan club, headed by Mr. Petro Lavreyuk, and the administration of the Dynamo Stadium for their fruitful cooperation. As a result of our common efforts, around 5 thousand people participated at the United Nations Stand Up Campaign. Those people who physically and symbolically stood up during the football match in Kyiv joined the global movement against poverty and together with their compatriots across the country and millions of people around the world estimated new Guinness Record.
A Guinness World Record shattered on 16-18 October 2009 weekend, when 173, 045, 325 citizens gathered at over 3,000 events in more than 120 countries, including Ukraine, demanding that their governments eradicate extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). “Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!, in its fourth year, has been certified by Guinness World Records as the largest mobilization of human beings in history, an increase of about 57 million people over last year.
I look forward to our continued cooperation.
Sincerely yours,
Olivier Adam
