On Friday, February 27, FC Dynamo Kyiv played their Matchday 18 fixture of the Ukrainian championship. “White-Blues” hosted FC Epitsentr Kamianets-Podilskyi at home.
Before this match Dynamo were in fourth place in the standings with 29 points from 17 matches. Their opponents were in 14th place having collected 14 points from 17 games.
Opening minutes of the match were relatively calm with both teams battling for the initiative in midfield. Hosts predictably attacked more while visitors mostly defended. Although much of the play took place in the center of the field, it was clear that both teams were highly motivated.
Dynamo created the first dangerous moment midway through the half. Kyryukhantsev failed to prevent Vivcharenko from delivering a low cross into the penalty area toward Ponomarenko. Matvii aimed for the far corner and came close to putting his team ahead but the ball went just wide of the post. Shortly afterward Shaparenko sent in a cross from the right but the referee stopped the attack ruling Ponomarenko offside.
In another episode Redushko found himself in a promising shooting position but was unable to produce an accurate strike. Brazhko traditionally tried his luck with long-range efforts though he could not hit the target.
Dynamo got their breakthrough in the latter part of the first half when Kristin fouled Voloshyn inside his own penalty area. The referee awarded a penalty and Brazhko confidently converted from the spot to make it 1:0. After that Dynamo delivered several potentially dangerous corner kicks but visitors managed to clear the danger. Toward the end of the first half another threat arose from a set piece but Fedotov collected the ball after Vivcharenko’s header.
The second half began with another goal for Dynamo. Hosts capitalized on a defensive mistake, intercepted the ball, and Ponomarenko found himself in front of goal. From the center of the penalty area he calmly beat the goalkeeper to double the lead – 2:0.
Less than five minutes later Ponomarenko completed his brace to make it a commanding scoreline. With a superb strike from the right edge of the goal area Matvii left the goalkeeper with no chance – 3:0.
The fourth goal was scored by Yarmolenko who had just come on as a substitute. The goal impressed the spectators with its beauty: Andrii received a deep pass from Brazhko, controlled the ball, assessed the situation and from the edge of the penalty arc chipped the goalkeeper – 4:0.
Dynamo continued to dominate and gave visitors no opportunity to reduce the deficit. Only once did Neshcheret have to step in after Demchenko’s free kick on target – the goalkeeper was equal to the task. It is also worth noting that during the final 10 minutes of the match Dynamo’s goal was defended by Viacheslav Surkis for whom this match marked his first-team debut. Notably the young goalkeeper was celebrating his birthday on the same day.
In the end it was a confident 4:0 victory for Dynamo.
Dynamo’s next match will take place away on Sunday, March 8, when they travel to face FC Polissya Zhytomyr in Matchday 19 of the Ukrainian championship.
