On Monday, December 1, Dynamo played their Matchday 14 fixture of the Ukrainian Championship. “White-Blues” hosted this season’s UPL newcomer – SC Poltava. Notably this was the first official match for Ihor Kostyuk as acting head coach of Dynamo’s first team.
The match featured teams from opposite ends of the league table. The visitors were in last place (16th) with 6 points from 13 matches. Dynamo had also played 13 matches, collecting 20 points and sitting 7th in the standings.
Dynamo created the first dangerous moment. In a promising attacking move Pikhalonok and Buialskii combined with the latter delivering a great pass to Voloshyn but Nazar’s low shot went just wide of the post. As expected Dynamo took control of the game but visitors defended in an organized and disciplined manner.
Most of the action took place near Poltava’s penalty area as visitors struggled to move the game away from their half. Dynamo however did not push the tempo. Buialskii had a chance with a first-time shot from Voloshyn’s cross but he fired straight at goalkeeper Voskonian. The Poltava keeper also stopped Kabaiev’s low attempt toward the near post.
Dynamo also failed to benefit from set-pieces – SC Poltava cleared their only dangerous corner. Then in added time of the first half visitors struck first on a counterattack. Capitalizing on defensive mistakes by Kyivans who failed to control the ball Marusyсh delivered a low cross from the left and Odaryuk fired a strong low shot from near the corner of the six-yard box into the far corner – 0:1. Teams went into halftime with Poltava leading by one.
In the second half the overall picture did not change much. The match lacked intensity, tension and spectacle. Dangerous chances were rare for both teams. Dynamo came closest to equalizing after two corners with similar routines but in both cases Guerrero was just a step too late to tap in at the far post.
Poltava put the ball into the net after a shot by Galenkov but the goal was disallowed for offside. Soon after visitors scored a legal goal – maximizing their efficiency from another corner. After delivery the ball fell to Misiura who struck from near the middle of the penalty area to double the lead – 0:2.
Dynamo responded almost immediately following a double substitution with Redushko and Yatsyk entering the match. Bohdan marked his debut with the first team by assisting Oleksandr: after a cross into the penalty area Yatsyk headed the ball into the net – 1:2. Redushko then created several more dangerous moments and Mykhavko came very close to finishing at the far post.
Dynamo spent final minutes pressing near Poltava’s goal. Dangerous attempts came from Guerrero, Mykhavko (after a Guerrero layoff) and Yatsyk. Guerrero missed the target, Voskonian showed an incredible reaction to deny Mykhavko and Yatsyk’s shot went narrowly wide.
Finally it is 1:2 – Dynamo defeated. Their next match in the Ukrainian Championship will be on Saturday, December 6, when they visit fellow league newcomer Kudrivka, representing the village of the same name in Chernihiv region.
