UEFA Youth League. Hibernian – Dynamo – 1:1. Match Report

On Wednesday, December 10, Dynamo Kyiv played the second leg of the UEFA Youth League Champions Path 3rd Round against their peers from Scotland’s Hibernian. It was the final match of the calendar year 2025 for the Kyiv side so Pavlo Cherednichenko’s team was determined to earn a positive result before the winter break.

Dynamo held a 1:0 advantage from the first leg which forced Hibernian’s players to apply pressure from the opening minutes in order to level the tie. The Scots controlled the ball early on. It’s worth noting a shot or cross from McSporran toward the near post which Surkis had to react to. Dynamo answered quickly – Redushko fired dangerously after a cross from Rybak though the winger was offside in that episode.

After the exchange of dangerous chances Hibernian continued to keep possession but Dynamo’s players prevented them from creating real scoring opportunities thanks to solid defensive positioning. Soon White-Blues began to control the ball themselves. That translated into a powerful long-range strike from Liusin which flew just wide of the Hibs post.

Midway through the first half Dynamo began to attack more frequently near Hibernian’s box, showing their intention to build on their aggregate lead. Redushko made a spectacular run into the penalty area but his shot was blocked. Minutes later Liusin capitalized on a poor clearance by the Scots inside their own box but his shot soared over the bar.

Dynamo’s pressure kept growing. In the 33rd minute Osypenko squared the ball to Ponomarenko whose shot struck the left post.

Hibernian responded by launching an attack that ended with one of their players falling inside Dynamo’s penalty area. The referee saw no foul and did not award a penalty. Soon after Clelland headed from a potentially dangerous position but Surkis calmly collected the ball.

In final minutes of the first half Dynamo had another huge chance to open the score. Osypenko delivered a brilliant pass between the lines to Liusin who was running clear on goal. A defender prevented him from shooting so he laid the ball off to Andreiko whose shot was also blocked.

At the start of the second half Dynamo maintained the momentum they’d built before the break. Andreiko and Redushko each fired on goal but neither attempt found the net.

However it was Hibernian who opened the scoring. In the 51st minute Clelland curled a shot from distance right into the top corner – an unstoppable strike. Dynamo responded almost immediately. Osypenko carried the ball forward on his own, reached the penalty area and hit a low shot that Mallon could not save.

After both teams scored the match became more open. Naturally Hibernian wanted to equalize the tie again while Dynamo sought to strengthen their advantage and settle the contest.

Dynamo continued to push for a second goal. Redushko who recently debuted for the first team kept showing tremendous hunger to score. In the 61st minute he shot toward the near post but Mallon tipped the ball out for a corner. Osypenko also broke into the Hibs penalty area again in search of a brace but couldn’t get a clean shot off.

In the 80th minute Dynamo nearly pulled ahead in spectacular fashion. After a corner from Redushko Ponomarenko attempted an overhead kick but the goalkeeper saved it. Moments later Redushko tried his luck from almost the halfway line, attempting to catch Mallon off guard, but the keeper reacted in time.

In final seconds Redushko had a chance to seal the tie once and for all but his shot in a one-on-one situation was blocked at the last moment.

Despite the efforts of both teams the score remained unchanged until the final whistle – a 1:1 draw. Dynamo defeated Hibernian 2:1 on aggregate and secured a place in the UEFA Youth League Round of 32. White-Blues head into the winter break in an excellent mood.
