Andriy Yarmolenko: «We are not at the level we should be at right now»

Dynamo winger Andriy Yarmolenko commented on the Ukrainian league match against Zhytomyr’s Polissya, in which the White-Blues suffered a 1:3 away defeat, in an interview with UPL TV:

– What would you like to say to the fans? How did you experience this match, and what did you discuss with the team in the dressing room?

– I won’t tell you what we discussed in the dressing room. As for the match itself, I believe today’s result was a fair one. One team wanted to win, while the other perhaps wanted to as well but failed to find the key to breaking down Polissya’s defense. Therefore, I believe the result was fair and Polissya deserved the victory. Congratulations to them.

– I think most fans are asking themselves right now: how did this happen? Your team played with a numerical advantage from the fifth minute, gaining a man advantage early in the match, but what happened after that?

– After that Polissya defended very well. When I had the opportunity during the air raid alert, I watched some of the second-half footage and came to the conclusion that we probably weren’t always positioned correctly on the pitch, and we lacked players in attack. Against such a compact defense, you need more players in the penalty area and better execution of the final passes. That’s exactly what we lacked today.

– Could the air raid alerts have affected the course of the match? Could the constant stoppages and interruptions have had an impact on your team’s performance?

– The conditions were the same for both teams. As I’ve already said, I believe the result was a fair one. I think this defeat should serve as a wake-up call for us. We need to be honest with ourselves and with the fans: we are not at the level we should be at right now.
