On Tuesday, June 27, Ukraine U21 played the Euro-2023 group stage final game – against Spain.
Both sides succeeded in previous matches and were to settle who wins the group. Although Spain were clear favorite, the Yellow-Blues managed to surprise many.
Three FC Dynamo Kyiv players were in Ukraine starting lineup – defenders Kostiantyn Vivcharenko and Olexandr Syrota, goalkeeper Ruslan Neshcheret. Halfback Volodymyr Brazhko made a substitute appearance in the second half.
Ukraine opened the score as Nazarenko rushed through the right wing and crossed accurately to Viunnyk, who headed the ball in.
Spain equalized early in the second half. Syrota tried to clear the ball, but hit Zhelizko which resulted in own goal.
Ruslan Rotan’s men stepped in front again in the 81st minute. Spanish keeper fouled against Sikan, referee awarded penalty and Sudakov converted from the spot.
Yet Ukraine didn’t manage to secure victory and Spain equalized again in the 90th minute.
Thus the Yellow-Blues finish second in the group. In the quarterfinal they are to face group D winners – France, Italy or Switzerland.
