Dynamo Kyiv U21 defender Denys Dykyi summed up the 8th-round UPL-2 match against Karpaty.
– Dynamo suffered a disappointing defeat today. The team fought until the very end and tried to get a result. In your opinion, what was missing?
– Every game is a new challenge for us. We need to win every time because we are Dynamo Kyiv. We understand that we are fighting for the top spot in the championship, and every victory adds points to our tally. I think that today, perhaps, we lacked character or were not fully prepared mentally in some respects, although I cannot say that for certain. We were unlucky. We had a lot of chances, but the ball simply wouldn’t go in.
– The team conceded after a set-piece routine. What went wrong at that moment? Why were you unable to prevent the goal?
– To be honest, I haven’t had a chance to watch that episode again yet. We had analysed our opponents’ set pieces and knew they had routines like that. Something went wrong, and we need to review that moment.
– In the first half you had a chance to score with a long-range shot, but the ball hit the crossbar. What were you thinking at that moment?
– I think Roman Salenko passed the ball to me. I saw that the right corner was open and immediately decided to shoot. It just so happened that the ball didn’t go in. In my opinion, it would have been a fantastic goal, but I wasn’t able to score.
– Emotions ran high on the pitch from the opening whistle to the final one. Was this influenced by the history of the rivalry between Dynamo and Karpaty, or was it simply the way the game unfolded?
– I think that was simply how the game unfolded. Every game involves emotions. Every opponent wants to beat us.
– What conclusions will the team draw from this match?
– We will have a full week to analyse our mistakes, review the tactical aspects and put everything right so that we do not make such mistakes in our upcoming matches and can win.
