The club was founded in 1937, but it got its current name in 1968.
In the time of Soviet Union the most significant achievement of the team was the domestic league bronze in 1966.
After the USSR collapse Neftchi won the Azerbaijan Premier League eight times and Azerbaijan Cup six times. In 2012/13 season they became the first Azerbaijan team to reach the Europa League group stage.
The key players of the club are Serbian goalkeeper Saša Stamenković, Paraguayan halfback Eric Ramos, Brazilian midfielder Flavio Valencio and Cameroonian striker Ernest Nfor.
