That was the essence of the battle between FC Dynamo Kyiv and PSV Eindhoven one step from 1974/75 Cup Winners’ Cup final.
Outplaying authorities
Several days before the game the head coach of our team Valeriy Lobanovskyi mentioned that what bothered him the most was our players’ excessive admiration for Dutch performers. He said that they should get rid of it.
Early in the game PSV weren’t very active and Kyivans were too hasty. The White-Blues controlled the ball more, but that didn’t give them any benefits.
Still 17 minutes into the match the score was opened. Muntian found Troshkin on the right flank, the latter put a cross into the box and Kolotov headed the ball in.
The second goal was netted 31 minutes into the game. Muntian took a free kick, goalkeeper didn’t trap the ball and Onyshchenko hit the target.
After the break the game didn’t change. Dutch side got down to business seriously, but they could hardly cope with Dynamo counterattacks. The White-Blues kept creating chances and 56 minutes into the match the pay-off came.
Troshkin put another cross into the penalty area from the flank, goalkeeper didn’t clear the ball and Blokhin scored – 3:0.
After that visitors stole the thunder as even one away goal could give them a chance in the return match. They made Dynamo only defend.
After the game Valeriy Lobanovskyi stated: “Of course the score made our players calm down a bit. We are still to fight for win on aggregate in the second leg. Now we all know that PSV are very strong rival”.

Overcoming the last turn
One could easily predict the way Dynamo would play against PSV away after 3:0 home win. Their task was to reach the final and they followed the plan. Kyivans’ defense included several lines. They tried to catch the home side flatfooted.
PSV didn’t have a lot of chances, but still they opened the score. Rudakov trapped the ball, but then spilled it and Edström hit the open goal.
After that Rudakov proved that it was an accident and parried Keilen’s shot. Still later both teams also didn’t have a lot of scoring opportunities.
In the second half PSV kept attacking monotonously. Edström was their key figure, but Dynamo players didn’t give him space and made him foul.
Then suddenly Veremeev put a low cross from the right flank and Buriak hit the target – 1:1.
After that PSV took a corner and visitors let Edström score with a header. Anyway Kyivans outplayed one of the main claimants upon the title 4:2 on aggregate.
There was only one step left – the game in Basel. It was a vital match Dynamo had to win.
