On Sunday, October 11, Dynamo Kyiv hosted their neighbours in the league standings, Lviv side Karpaty, in Round 8 of the Ukrainian Premier League. Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes due to an air raid alert.
From the opening whistle, both teams showed their determination and commitment to the contest. This mostly resulted in fouls, although both sides also managed to create scoring opportunities.
The first chance fell to the Green-and-Whites. In the 9th minute, following a corner kick, Sery headed towards goal, but Bushchan made a fine save on the goal line. Dynamo responded with a set-piece opportunity of their own when Mykhavko met a corner delivery. However, Taras’s header flew wide of the far post.
In the 34th minute, the ball found the back of Dynamo’s net. Rusyn dispossessed Sych near the touchline, and following a pass into the penalty area, the ball reached Chachua. Mykhavko blocked the Karpaty player’s shot, but the ball rebounded to the unmarked Cheber, who fired into the empty net from close range. Fortunately for the Kyiv side, the goal was disallowed because Cheber was in an offside position.
The visitors created the final opportunity before the break as well. In the 42nd minute, the lively Rusyn broke into the penalty area down the left flank and delivered a low cross towards the six-yard box. The ball deflected off Mykhavko’s foot and headed towards the corner, but Bushchan reacted brilliantly to save his team. The sides therefore went into the interval with the score at 0:0.
The pattern of play remained unchanged after the break, and Karpaty again created the first opportunity. In the 50th minute, Serhiy headed over the bar following a corner. On the hour mark, after a throw-in, Babohlo flicked the ball on, and Chachua struck it superbly on the volley, aiming just under the crossbar. However, Bushchan produced a brilliant save to turn the ball behind for a corner.
In the 62nd minute, the visitors were reduced to ten men. While attempting to reach the ball, Rusyn caught Bushchan on the knee and received his second yellow card. Just four minutes later, Dynamo capitalised on their numerical advantage to finally break the deadlock. Voloshyn sent the ball from the left flank towards the edge of the penalty area, where Ponomarenko controlled it, evaded Pedroso’s challenge with a few touches and fired accurately into the bottom corner – 1:0.
To their credit, Karpaty did not give up and could have equalised in the 71st minute. Following a corner, the ball fell to Miroshnychenko, who struck it on the volley. Bushchan had been unable to see the moment of the shot, but he still managed to make a spectacular diving save.
The closing stages were also tense, resulting in several yellow cards and the dismissal of one of Karpaty head coach’s assistants. The teams also exchanged major chances in stoppage time. First, Voloshyn almost punished the Karpaty goalkeeper, who had ventured into Dynamo’s penalty area for a corner, but Voloshyn failed to hit the empty net from long range. Soon afterwards, following a long ball into Dynamo’s penalty area, Diedov headed towards goal from close range, but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
In the end, Dynamo secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory. The White-Blues move up to third place in the league standings and will face Zhytomyr side Polissia away from home next Sunday, October 18, in the next round.
