On Wednesday, October 28, Dynamo Kyiv U19 began their campaign in the 2026/2027 UEFA Youth League season. On this day, the White-Blues played the first leg of the second round of the Champions Path play-offs. At this stage, the White-Blues faced their counterparts from Scottish side Rangers, whom our team hosted in a nominal home match.
Dynamo got off to a flying start and took the lead as early as the 4th minute. Savane passed the ball to Lyusin, and Pavlo decided to try his luck with a long-range shot – after a deflection, the ball went into the net past the Scottish goalkeeper, who had come too far off his line – 1:0.
After that, Dynamo did not take their foot off the gas and continued to create pressure and danger near the opponents’ goal. Our players approached the opposition’s goal through long balls. Andreyko was particularly active during this period, delivering dangerous crosses from the flank into the penalty area and also taking shots at goal, although one of his efforts was blocked. In another episode, the same Andreyko found himself in a promising position in the centre of the penalty area after an excellent pass from Buravtsov, but he was unable to beat McGuire, who saved the ball with his foot. Buravtsov himself also had chances, but our striker was a little unlucky.
The visitors, meanwhile, tried to threaten Roienko’s goal mainly from set pieces, but the White-Blues defended in a coordinated and reliable manner. However, in one episode, the opponents let Kyiv off the hook when, following a corner, Ngwenya failed to hit the target with Roienko having left his goal. Later, Stewart aimed for the far corner with a free kick, but Roienko produced an impressive diving save to keep his team in the game.
In response, Savane attempted a shot from the edge of the penalty area towards the far top corner, but the ball went over the bar. During the final minutes of the first half, Rangers players spent more time in the Ukrainians’ half, but they failed to benefit from their territorial advantage. Instead, in stoppage time, the hosts scored a second goal after winning the ball in midfield: Andreyko played an excellent through ball to Fedorenko, who, from around the edge of the penalty area and under pressure from a defender, managed to send the ball into the net – 2:0.
The Scottish players started the second half more actively. Rankin’s shot on target was comfortably saved by Roienko. McCallion could have scored, but after a deflection, the ball went out for a corner. Roienko also gathered the ball following another central effort from Rankin. Meanwhile, at the other end, Ohorodnik came close to making it 3:0 after a corner, but goalkeeper McGuire was also reliable.
Midway through the half, Andreyko missed a remarkable opportunity after an excellent pass from Ozymay left him one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Ivan hit the keeper. Soon afterwards, Rangers pulled one goal back after a mistake by Roienko. Our goalkeeper attempted to pass the ball to Hubenko, but Glasgow intercepted it and found the net – 2:1. However, the Kyiv side did not remain disappointed for long and restored their two-goal advantage in the very next attack. Buravtsov received an accurate pass from midfield, broke into the penalty area and gave the goalkeeper no chance – 3:1. Nevertheless, the final word belonged to the visitors. Fernie took a shot from outside the penalty area. Roienko reacted to the effort, but Ferguson was first to the rebound and redirected the ball into the net from inside the six-yard box.
Thus, the match ended 3:2, with Dynamo U19 claiming a narrow home victory.
According to the regulations, the tie consists of two matches. Dynamo U19 will play the return leg against Rangers U19 away in a week, on November 4.
