After Dynamo’s 3:2 victory over Rangers in the first leg of the second round of the UEFA Youth League, the opponents met again a week later in Scotland to decide the outcome of the tie.
There were no changes to the starting lineup of Pavlo Cherednichenko and Vadym Milko’s team compared to the first match, while the Scottish side made just one change, with Callum Young coming into the starting eleven.
The first match was a hard-fought and entertaining encounter, and the return leg promised to be just as exciting. Indeed, just as a week earlier, neither team sat back in defence. Maksym Roienko was called into action for the first time in the 14th minute, saving his team after a shot from James Reid.
However, even he was powerless in the 16th minute when the Scots launched a quick counterattack. Lewis Stewart received the ball in Dynamo’s half, advanced towards goal and, from the edge of the penalty area, sent a precise shot into the bottom corner to level the aggregate score.
Having lost their advantage, the Kyiv side had to start all over again. Andriiko produced Dynamo’s first well-directed shot at the Rangers goal in the 20th minute. Five minutes later, Lyusin threatened with an accurate low effort from 18 metres, which McGuire dealt with. However, the hosts continued to attack and attempt long-range efforts more frequently, with 16-year-old Kyle Glasgow particularly keen to take the initiative.
It was only towards the end of the first half that the White-Blues took control and launched several dangerous attacks. In the 40th minute, following a good combination and a final pass from Lyusin, Andriiko found himself in a favourable shooting position approximately 14 metres from goal, to the left of centre, but failed to hit the target. In stoppage time, the Kyiv side launched a promising vertical attack initiated by Savane and continued by Buravtsov, but the defenders prevented Fedorenko from finishing the move, clearing the ball for a corner.
The second half began with an evenly balanced game, but the hosts soon scored their second goal. It seemed that Dynamo had already closed down the spaces during a Rangers counterattack, but Kyle Glasgow received the ball on the edge of the penalty area, shifted it onto his left foot and curled a shot from behind a defender into the far corner – 2:0.
In the 74th minute, the scoreline became emphatic. Dynamo lost possession while attacking, and the Scots quickly moved the ball forward with a vertical pass to Max Cameron. He broke into the penalty area, got away from Danylo Ohorodnik's marking and found the far corner from a tight angle.
A few minutes later, the Kyiv side had a chance to pull one goal back when Buravtsov fired towards goal after a pass from Lyusin, but a defender threw himself in front of the ball, while Hubenko failed to convert the rebound. Dynamo had another opportunity from a corner, but Ozymay’s close-range header went narrowly wide. In the 89th minute, Hrodzinsky sent the ball past the goalkeeper from close range, but it struck the post...
Dynamo lost the tie 3:5 on aggregate and ended their European campaign.
