Ukraine U19 with Hubenko in the squad defeat Northern Ireland

On Wednesday, March 25, Ukraine U19 national team (players born in 2007 or later) began their campaign in the decisive stage of qualification for the UEFA European Championship 2026 (Elite Round). Teams are divided into seven groups of four with only group winners advancing to the final tournament which will take place this summer in Wales.

In their opening Elite Round match Ukraine faced Northern Ireland U19.

The first half was marked by intense physical battles and relatively few clear chances. Toward the end of the half Ukraine applied strong pressure but the Northern Irish defense managed to hold on.

Early in the second half the breakthrough came. In the 47th minute Soroka scored to put Ukraine ahead. Shortly after the Ukrainian side created several more opportunities but failed to convert them.

The final whistle confirmed a 1:0 victory for Ukraine U19 giving them a strong start in the Elite Round qualifiers.

Dynamo Kyiv defender Kostiantyn Hubenko came on as a substitute in the 87th minute, helping the team see out the win in the closing stages.

Ukraine’s next match in the Elite Round will be against Kazakhstan, scheduled for Saturday, March 28 at 11:00.
