Denys Zhdanov: “We beat Shakhtar twice, didn’t lose a single match but had too many draws”

Dynamo U19 midfielder Denys Zhdanov scored in the home match against Kudrivka, which was the final game of the season for our team. After the match, he commented on the White-Blues’ emphatic 7:2 victory and summed up the season:

— I can’t say that my mood after the game is completely satisfying, because we finished second in the championship. But still, a win is a win. It turned out to be a good match, we won by a big score. We converted many of our chances, created plenty of opportunities, and in the end earned a confident victory. We did what we had to do. We could have scored even more, but we can still be satisfied with this result. The mood is good, although there are obviously no championship emotions.

— Tell us more about your goal.

— I remember that Pavlo Liusin passed the ball to me. I cut inside onto my right foot and shot. It turned out very well. I’m glad that I helped the team turn the game around and put us in front, because at that moment the score was 1:1.

— How would you assess the season overall?

— It turned out to be a decent season. We beat Shakhtar twice, didn’t lose a single match, but played too many draws. That’s why we finished second in the championship. I can’t say that the season was completely successful, but we have what we have.

— How difficult was it to play in the second half of the season after several players – Ponomarenko, Zakharchenko, Korobov, and Redushko – moved up to the first team?

— At first, it felt like we had lost our leaders. But the team prepared well, the guys built chemistry, started to understand and feel each other better, and the squad became well-coordinated. So the second half of the season also turned out pretty well.

— Does the example of those who have already moved up to the first team motivate you?

— Yes, of course. We see with our own eyes that every player in the team has a chance to make it to the first team or the national team, like Matvii Ponomarenko, for example. That is very motivating.

— What are your plans for the vacation?

— First, I’ll get some rest from matches and training, and then I’ll get back to work. I need to become better and next season fight only for first place. I think we’ll regroup after the vacation around June 20. Then we’ll start preparing.
