Events

No one could oppose Kyivans worthy in domestic league for the second season in a row. Eventually the White-Blues won the title with rivals lacking at least five points behind them. Dynamo conceded only 11 goals in 36 matches.

International recognition also found our team. Kyivans outplayed Celtic FC on aggregate in the European Champions Cup first round. Still after that they were defeated by Gornik Zabrze.

Four Dynamo performers became Honoured Masters of Sports that year – Vasyl Turianchyk, Viktor Serebrianykov, Andriy Biba and Volodymyr Shcheholkov.

Players

In 1967 several Dynamo players were born: Oleh Volotiok (1992; 13 matches, 2 goals), Gintaras Kvitkauskas (1992; 6 matches), Ihor Korniyets (1984-1985, 1987-1989; 13 matches), Ervand Sukiasian (1992-1993; 8 matches, 2 goals), Serhiy Shmatovalenko.

The latter was born in Odesa. He started his career in the local SCA team. In 1987 he joined FC CSCA Moscow and after that – FC Dynamo Kyiv. He featured for 12 years for the White-Blues (1987-1999) and made more than 200 appearances in the USSR and Ukrainian leagues. He is the Soviet Top League winner (1990), champion of Ukraine (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998), Ukrainian Cup holder (1993, 1996) and European Under-21 Championship triumphant. He has 4 appearances for the USSR national team and 8 for Ukraine to his name.

Memorable matches

As it became clear that Dynamo would face Celtic FC in the European Champions Cup round of 32 everyone recalled the previous season, when Kyivans lost against Scottish side in the Cup Winners’ Cup (0:3 and 0:0).

Still the White-Blues made proper conclusions after defeat. Anatoliy Puzach opened the score early in the game after perfect counterattack. 31 minutes into the match Anatoliy Byshovets doubled the score. In the second half Celtic hit the target only once. After home draw Dynamo went through to the next stage.
