In 1979 the number of the Soviet Top League participants was increased to 18. National cup regulations also changed. FC Dynamo Kyiv were outplayed by FC CSCA Moscow (0:1) early in the season.

Rejuvenation of the White-Blues squad was on. Fomenko, Reshko, Onyshchenko finished their careers while Romenskyi, Zhuravliov, Demianenko, Kaplun joined the team. Besides a lot of main squad performers were injured.

Kyivans finished third in the domestic league that season.

Dynamo defeated CSCA Sofia and FC Banik Ostrava in the UEFA Cup, but then lost against PFC Lokomotiv Sofia.

Players

In 1979 Laszlo Bodnar (featured for Dynamo from 2000 till 2004; 51 matches, 3 goals), Vladimir Kuzmichev (2000-2001; 17 matches, 2 goals), Georgi Peev (2000-2006; 85 matches, 8 goals), Yuriy Tselykh (1999-2000; 1 match) and Andriy Nesmachnyi were born.

The latter went in for football in Simferopol. Andriy was spotted by FC Dynamo Kyiv scouts when he was 16. At first he performed for Dynamo-3, then for Dynamo-2 and eventually Valeriy Lobanovskyi let him join the main squad. Nesmachnyi is the UPL sixfold winner, Ukrainian Cup fivefold holder and Ukrainian Super Cup triumphant. He made almost 300 appearances for the White-Blues and netted 10 goals.

He made his debut for Ukraine national team in 2000. Andriy participated in 2006 World Cup and was awarded with Oder For Courage of the Third Class. He has 67 caps to his name.

Memorable matches

After away defeat against FC Banik Ostrava (0:1) in the UEFA Cup round of 32 the White-Blues had to win in Kyiv.

In the first half supporters, who came to Dynamo Stadium, didn’t see goals.

Home side opened the score 60 minutes into the game as Demianenko hit the bottom corner.

12 minutes before the time Khapsalis scored the decider.
