Dynamo started the last year of the USSR and Soviet Top League not only without Valeriy Lobanovskyi, but also without the majority of first team regulars. It was hardly possible for newcomers to keep up.
Still in spring the team opposed Barcelona worthy in the Cup Winners’ Cup quarterfinal. In the domestic league the White-Blues finished fifth.
In Autumn Dynamo qualified for the Champions League group stage, but eventually got the wooden spoon.
In December of 1991 the USSR collapsed (watch VIDEO of Dynamo last match in the Soviet Top League). Ukraine became the independent state.
FC Dynamo Kyiv won the Soviet Top League 13 times and USSR Cup nine times. The team got European recognition and stepped into the new stage of its history.
Players
In 1991 Dynamo performers Aleksandar Dragović, Yevhen Makarenko, Serhiy Sydorchuk and Dynamo-2 players Yevhen Morozenko and Ivan Spychka were born.
Some of them have already become Kyivans’ leaders. For example, this season Aleksandar Dragović is the leader in number of matches played in all competitions, Serhiy Sydorchuk has become first team regular. Last year he made his debut for Ukraine national team and scored a couple of important goals.
Yevhen Makarenko missed the major part of the first half of the season due to injury, but he’s about to start struggling for starting spot again. Polish striker Lukasz Teodorczyk is also to prove that he’s worth featuring for the main squad. It’s quite clear that he’s a high profile performer, but competition is fierce.
Memorable matches
After the majority of first team regulars left the team (Bal, Demianenko, Chanov, Lytovchenko, Protasov, Rats, Yuran) it was difficult for Dynamo fans to count on success on European arena. Still youngsters managed to deliver a battle to Barcelona.
In Kyiv Dynamo conceded early in the game, but Serhiy Zayets netted the equalizer rather quickly. Unfortunately the White-Blues let visitors hit the target again right before the break.
In the second half both sides scored from the spot. The score 2:3 left few chances for Dynamo to reach the next stage as they had to defeat Barcelona away by two goals for that.
Still 62 minutes into the second leg Serhiy Yuran slotted our team ahead. After that he had another scoring opportunity, but missed. A minute before the time home side scored and Kyivans tumbled out with their heads held high.
