FC Dynamo Kyiv in the year of Blue Wooden Goat. 2003

The last on our list is the year 2003.

Events

As Dynamo tumbled out of the UEFA Champions League after the group stage they focused on domestic competitions. After the first half of the season Kyivans were fourth in the UPL standings, but eventually they finished first and defeated FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukrainian Cup final.

Before the start of 2003/2004 season Dynamo head coach Olexiy Mykhailychenko mentioned that there was no need for serious changes. Still he kept looking for new performers. The true discovery was 20-year-old halfback Oleh Husiev, who became the first team regular very quickly.

In autumn the White-Blues outplayed Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League qualification. In the group stage they were victorious over Lokomotiv Moscow (2:0) and Arsenal London (2:1) at home arena and drew against Inter Milan (1:1). Still they suffered three defeats away and didn’t reach the next stage.

Players

Players, born in 2003, are to work a lot to become professionals in future. Today Dynamo U-12 demonstrate good results.

Memorable matches

It was important for Dynamo to start the Champions League group stage with victory, especially considering that in the first game they faced Russian side FC Lokomotiv Moscow. The match was close. Diogo Rincon scored brace late in the second half and thus the White-Blues won deservedly.

That year Arsenal London also didn’t earn a single point in Kyiv. Maksim Shatskikh and Valentyn Belkevych scored for Dynamo. Thierry Henry hit the target 80 minutes into the game, but that didn’t help his team salvage a draw.
