Dynamo – Zorya: Cup history

Dynamo Kyiv and Zorya Luhansk last met in the Ukrainian Premier League game on October 17 this year. The Cup tournament, however, had brought the opponents into competitive format only three times. These encounters took place in Soviet times.

In 1970, the teams were drawn against each other to play in the USSR Cup Round of 16 tie. The first leg took place in Kyiv and ended in Dynamo’s 3:0 victory (goals were scored by Anatoliy Bogovyk, Volodymyr Troshkin and Viktor Kashchey). The return match was played three days later. FC Zorya managed to gain revenge for their defeat on away soil beating their opponents 1-0 (the winning goal was netted by Vyacheslav Semenov).

The competitors met again four years later, this time in the 1974 USSR Cup final. The match, which was held at the Lenin Stadium, became an uphill struggle for both teams. Nevertheless, the Kyivers managed to seal a 3-0 win in extra time as FC Dynamo Kyiv claimed the USSR Cup for the fourth time.
