In 1965 he transferred to Dynamo from Shakhtar Donetsk.
Khmelnytskyi made 271 appearances for the White-Blues and scored 54 goals. He is four-time USSR national champion and two-time USSR Cup winner.
At the moment Vitaliy Khmelnytskyi works as a coach in Dynamo Kyiv football Academy.
