Presenting the opponent: Atlético Paranaense (Brazil)

History and facts

This club was founded on March 21 1924 as the result of a merge between two older Curitiba teams, Internacional and América.

In 2001 Atletico won the domestic league. They’ve also triumphed in Campeonato Paranaense 22 times.

In 2005 Hurricanes (nickname of the team) became Copa Lobertadores finalists.

Change of coaches and current situation

After relegation to Serie B in 2011 Ricardo Drubscky took charge of the team. He helped Atletico promote to Serie A, but after that Vagner Mancini took his place and won the domestic league bronze, which let the club feature in Copa Libertadores in 2014.

Last September Claudio Oliveira became Atletico new head coach.

Personalities

One of Atletico leaders in 27-year-old goalkeeper Weverton.

Defenders Sueliton and Cleberson were really irreplaceable last season. 19-year-old Leo Pereira looks quite promising.

As for midfielders, special attention should be paid to 26-year-old Deivid and 19-year-old Marcos Guilherme.
Best strikers are 21-year-old Douglas Coutinho (7 goals in 28 matches last season) and 29-year-old Cleo (9 goals in 20 matches).

Preparation for the new season

Atlético Paranaense are getting ready for the season in Europa, which is quite unusual for Brazilian clubs.

In 2012/2013 season FC Dynamo Kyiv under the charge of Oleh Blokhin lost against Hurricanes within the Marbella Cup – 0:1.

This winter Oliveira’s men have already played six sparrings (W-2, D-2, L-2).
