For the first time ever our club won one of the European competitions – Cup Winners’ Cup. To leave their names in football chronicle players and coaches Valeriy Lobanovskyi and Oleh Bazylevych had to overcome five stages on their way to the peak. You can find out how that was from the series of articles on our site dedicated to that outstanding event.
Significant advantage, one goal
Spectators, who came to the Central Stadium saw publicity boards along the southern stand. “Greetings to Bulgarian sportsmen”, - stated the inscription on them. PFC CSKA Sofia players also got lots of flowers and a present.
Dynamo started attacking at once. Goalkeeper Iordanov had to clear Blokhin’s shot a minute into the game. Another minute later he parried Muntian’s shot from 25-meter distance.
The White-Blues used 1-4-3-3 formation. They had enough information about their opponent and knew what to do.
Kyivans created scoring chances almost every minute, but couldn’t hit the target. Visitors followed Blokhin very attentively, but eventually it turned out that they should have focused on Muntian, who was very active. Shepel also caused Bulgarian side a lot of problems.
In the first half Dynamo finished 11 attacks dangerously, put 5 corners and totally controlled the game, but after 45 minutes the score was 0:0.
Kyivans started the second half also very aggressively and 58 minutes into the match Blokhin finally scored.
After that there was impressive solo effort by Muntian, who eluded several opponents, but then missed.
The outcome of that game is win of our team by narrow margin, which didn’t seem to be enough before the second leg…

Veremeev put a cross, Blokhin scored
Our players were getting ready for the game in Sofia really seriously. They recorded CSKA match against Levski and analyzed it.
Home side rushed forward early in the game, but faced orderly defense. Our team had some problems as Troshkin and Muntian didn’t take part in the match, but performers, who replaced them, featured worthily.
The White-Blues didn’t give CSKA space on flanks and made them attack through the center.
Dynamo keeper Rudakov was calm and coldblooded. He demonstrated his great reaction twice. In the first half he didn’t let Kolev hit the upper V and after the break he got the ball in the bottom corner after Liubomirov’s shot.
Kyivans had good counterattacks that finished with passes to Blokhin and Onyshchenko.
If they had to choose the man of that match that would have been Volodymyr Veremeev.
Nine minutes before the time he put a great cross into the box and Blokhin headed the ball in.
Thus Dynamo defeated CSKA twice and reached the round of 16.
