Citizens of communistic state hurried to work secure about the following day and then returned to their small apartments to switch on TV at 21:00 and hear standard news program. Still that year informational space exploded three times.
In July the whole country followed the coupling of Soiuz and Apollo and on the New Year’s Eve watched new blockbuster movie “The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath”. Several days before that 23-year-old FC Dynamo Kyiv striker Oleh Blokhin got Ballon d’Or as the best player of Europe.
All Dynamo fans knew their favorite team went to Munich to play the UEFA Super Cup first leg against Bayern, but no one saw this game in the USSR on September 9 as it wasn’t broadcasted on TV….
Still at midnight emotionless newscaster announced: “FC Dynamo Kyiv have defeated Bayern Munich in the Super Cup first leg – 1:0. The goal was scored by Oleh Blokhin 67 minutes into the game”.
Courage of Kyivans’ captain Viktor Kolotov, who played despite injury, and dedication of former reservists wasn’t mentioned. Just like the way Oleh Blokhin scored that incredible goal.
67 minutes into the match the White-Blues #11 obtained the ball in the midfield and rushed to Bayern penalty area, where four defenders including Franz Beckenbauer tried to stop him. In a moment 30.000 spectators were astonished with what they saw. Later Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger magazine journalist described that episode as follows: “Kyivans’ young striker hit the far corner though all Bayern defenders were kind of dancing around him. It was incredible goal!”
Less than in a month millions of TV viewers were envious of 102,000 fans, who managed to buy tickets to Republican Stadium in Kyiv.
Eventually the battle started! The stadium was like a volcano and five minutes before the break Oleh Blokhin obtained the long ball, eluded Schwarzenbeck and hit the target – 1:0.
53 minutes into the match Blokhin took free kick and doubled the score with well-placed shot!
There were a lot of fabulous performances in the career of Oleh Blokhin, but due to those two games in 1975 fast guy with letter D on his chest will be remembered forever.
