This time we’ll tell you about 2002.
Events
In spring of 2002 Kyivans demonstrated rather impressive play. In January the White-Blues won the Commonwealth of Independent States Cup. This trophy was the last for Dynamo head coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi, who passed away on May 13.
Such loss had negative impact on the team and Kyivans let FC Shakhtar Donetsk win the UPL for the first time in their history. Eventually Olexiy Mykhailychenko took charge of Dynamo.
Before the start of 2002/03 season Ihor Surkis became FC Dynamo Kyiv president.
The White-Blues won the UPL, but tumbled out of the Champions League and then out of the UEFA Cup.
Players
Dynamo players born in 2002 are too young to have some significant achievements. Still it’s already noticeable that there are many promising performers among them.
Memorable matches
In 2002 Kyivans won neither UPL nor Ukrainian Cup. Valeriy Lobanovskyi’s death was a shock for the team.
On May 7 the White-Blues faced FC Metalurh Zaporizhya away. Dynamo won the game by three goals to one, but after the final whistle Lobanovskyi was taken to the hospital. Doctors detected hypertensive crisis.
Six days later he died…
