On Sunday, November 2, Dynamo Kyiv played their match of the 11th round of the Ukrainian Premier League. Just a few days after facing Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukrainian Cup Round of 16 in Kyiv the “White-Blues” travelled to Lviv to take on their rivals again – this time in the league.
The game featured the leaders of the standings: Shakhtar entered the match in first place with 21 points from 10 games while Dynamo sat second with 20 points from the same number of matches.
The match started in the worst possible way for Dynamo – already in the 3rd minute hosts opened the scoring from a corner kick. Eguinaldo escaped his markers and leapt higher than everyone to head the ball into the net, making it 1:0.
The game continued at a high pace with both teams moving the ball quickly across midfield and creating attacking moments. Shakhtar threatened mainly from set pieces and once again Eguinaldo nearly found the target with a low shot just wide of the post. Midway through the half Marlon Gomes made a rough tackle on Popov but escaped with only a yellow card.
The tension on the pitch kept rising as both sides played with intensity and determination. In one of Shakhtar’s best moments Pedrinho somehow missed the target from a great position after Eguinaldo’s cross. Dynamo responded with a shot from Ogundana though it lacked accuracy.
Shakhtar had further attempts through Pedrinho and Matviyenko while just before halftime Neshcheret denied Marlon Gomes with a crucial save after a header. In stoppage time Yarmolenko came inches away from equalizing after a dangerous low cross from Pikhalonok but goalkeeper Riznyk reacted just in time. The teams went into the break with Shakhtar leading 1:0.
Dynamo came out aggressively after the restart. Riznyk made a brilliant save tipping Buialskii’s shot around the post. Soon after Thiare flicked on a corner to Kabaiev who found the net – but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Moments later Nevertton doubled Shakhtar’s lead with a stunning strike from outside the box into the top corner – 2:0. However Dynamo quickly responded: just two minutes later Buialskii reduced the deficit turning in Karavaiev’s low cross from the right. VAR confirmed the goal – 2:1.
The match grew even more heated as both teams played on the edge and emotions ran high. Konoplia clashed with Ogundana inside the box but the referee decided there was no foul. Both sides continued to create chances: Shakhtar threatened through Meirelles and Izaki while Dynamo’s Buialskii and Kabaiev remained dangerous.
In stoppage time Dynamo threw everyone forward in search of an equalizer but were caught on the counterattack. Izaki and Meirelles broke away and, although Brazhko and Kabaiev tried to clear the danger, the ball deflected off Kabaiev and went into the net.
A disappointing defeat for Dynamo in a tense and emotional encounter. The Kyiv side will play their next Premier League match on Sunday, November 9, at home against LNZ Cherkasy.
